midnight rambler

do you ever have those nights that you can't get to sleep, so you make lists in your head?

Well I was doing this last night, and even managed to do it in a dream.
I'm compiling a list of the stuff I need to get before I push this baby out, essentials really... like bras and towels and exciting things like that. It's amazing how I'm consumed by getting ready now... I guess its just another pregnancy symptom, I think you could put it down to nesting.

I managed to buy 36 nappies on trademe for $50 over the weekend, which is great!
They are the old school white squares with pink stripes, which I thought was better than spending $30 per peice on the more modern fitted nappies, and these ones can be folded to fit, as I have a feeling this baby may have long skinny legs! I like the idea of the nappies blowing in the wind on my washing line, and it really fits with our ex-state nana house theme! :)

I will be using disposables in the first few days, as apparently baby has black poo which stains cloth nappies and I think it will just be more convenient, I will probably also use disposables when we go out too, but I really don't want to use them full time as they are loaded full of chemicals and the thought of them sitting in a landfill somewhere grosses me out. I've been amazed on how much we have cut down on rubbish since we started composting and better recycling, I think we have used 7 rubbish bags since we moved in in June last year, great eh? I intend to keep it that was, and even do better, so flushing babies poo down the toilet has to be done!

It's gotten really cold in Wellington over the last few days, I think I might have jinxed the good weather by complaining about it too much, oh dear. Anyway, have the merino on today and it's good to not be sweating up a storm!

I have 4 more working days after today, and the lovely Jane, my replacement starts on Wednesday, so life will be even easier then, as I can get her to do everything, whilst I sip cups of tea and try to remember everything I have to tell her about Thistle Hall.

I will miss this place, but I intend to join the board once baby and I have gotten into the kind of routine which will allow me to step out once a month on a Wednesday night for a few hours.
It will be great to be able to keep in contact with all the lovely ladies on the board here, who have been so supportive of me in the last 2.5 years.

recovery position

It's taken me a while to recover from Womad and Easter.

Firstly Womad was amazing, I'm so glad I went, and slept really well in the tent due to all the exercise I got walking up and down hills all day. Really enjoyed a lot of the local acts, SJD, Age Pryor and Kora, an amazing Kapa Haka Group Whangara Mai Tawhiti, who did old school waiata accompanied by a very funny MC who told stories of the songs and war time maori. Also loved Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and got to hear and interview with Sharon and Bosco by Nick Bollinger, which was pretty cool and inspiring... love people who are passionate about vinyl!

Toumani Diabate was a Kora player from Mali, he was amazing and the kora is such a beautiful instrument. Liked it more when he played the traditional stuff, rather than accompanied with his modern band. Also enjoyed Peruvian Susana Baca, Farafina and gospel singer Mavis Staples. Anyway, it took me a few days to recover and then it was easter.

I made hot cross buns from scratch, which were pretty damned fine, should have taken a photo! Keen to make them again, with or without the cross. Then we pretty much spent the rest of the weekend scraping wallpaper. The good news is that we are almost done and will start sanding and plastering this and next weekend, and then painting. Cutting it pretty fine.

I am 35 weeks pregnant today, and feeling it. I know I still have some room to grow, but feeling a bit heavy and uncomfortable now. Sleeping is a luxury, I'm not doing that so much, which zaps my energy. I have been reading like a madwoman though, devouring a book a day, almost. Been reading Alexander Mcall-Smith books, which are pretty light and tasty, and perfect for where my head is at. Can't wait to see the #1 Ladies Detective Agency movie when it finally comes out here. Also just re-read Danny the Champion of the World By Roald Dahl which was so lovely and inspiring and had a lovely message for parents in it to be bright and sparky and have fun with your children. It has made me want to re-read all my favourite childhood books, so may just do that!

I have had a lot of heartburn and indigestion in the last week, my sister Lauren says it means my baby will have hair. She is an old wife though, but you heard it here first.

an update

It's been a week or so since I blogged. Been keeping busy, feeling pretty tired too.
We have really started going for it with re-decorating our bedroom, and we took full advantage of the sale at Guthrie Bowron on the weekend and bought the paint for our bedroom. It's a Dulux colour called Pukaki, what I would call a dark teal. Lovely, can't wait to see it on the walls, but we have a fair bit of work to do before then.

On Sunday we spent a lot of the day stripping wallpaper off the walls, about 5 layers I think, dating back to 1950 when the house was built. Layer apon layer apon layer. It's a pretty boring task, but it has to be done. There will be a lot of plastering to do when the paper is off too, but the walls themselves won't take that long to paint.

After the room is painted, I plan to take the cupboard doors off one of the cupboards in the room and turn it into a bookshelf. This will be a good place for special objects we want to keep away from both babies, as well as basket storage for personal bits and peices. It does mean we will lose a laundry cupboard, but I plan to buy an old cupboard and install it in the laundy for sheets and things to be stored in... Andy is keeping an eye out a weekly dunbar sloan auctions.

We've also been looking at colours for the babies room, currently our sunroom. It has a lot of windows and as you would expect is very sunny and bright. I thought a nice apple green, not to bright would be good to cool the room down, and I remember a room Dad had in his Nelson Cres house, that was a lovely apple green. Anyway, after trialing about 7 different greens we have decided to abort that plan, nothing looks right in there, it's all way too bright. It's lucky we have a while to think about it, as we plan to have baby in our room for the first 6 months anyway.

This week at work we are interviewing for my replcaement, so exciting!
I have a short week too, cos we are off to Womad on Friday! yay!

Let the knitted fun begin...

Last week we recieved two knitted toys.

The first from Val at Andy's work was Angus the scottie dog, Val has only recently started knitting, she has done an amzing job. The second was from my mother A big bright yellow teddy, who currently has no name.

I can't wait to see what's next!
